VAGBHATA:

In Ayurveda we come across two acharyas by the name Vaghbhata- Vridha Vaghbhata and Laghu Vaghbhata. Vridha Vaghbhata was Author of ‘Astanga Sangraha’ which contain 6 sections and 150 chapters and Laghu Vaghbhata was the author of Astanga Hridaya – which contains 6 sections and 120 chapters These are considered to be the best books to know the fundamentals of Ayurveda. Rasa Ratna Samuchaya (a text on Alchemy) was also said to be written by Vaghbhata.

Ashtangasamgraha was written by combining the Kayachikiltsa explained in Charaka Samhitha and Salyachikiltsa in Susrutha Samhitha. Ashtanga Hridaya is the poetry form of Ashtanga Samagraha.

Sarghadhara

Sarngadhara has written a book on Pharmacology which mainly describes Pulse Examination, Pancharama, Herb collection, Preparation of Medicines and the shelf life. The book is called ‘Sarngadhara Samhita’. It contains 32 chapters

Madhavakara

Madhavacharya is famous as the author of ‘Madhava Nidana’. His period is considered as 8th or 9th AD as his book contain references from the famous Brihat-trayee (Charaks SAmhitha, Susrutha Samhitha, Ashtanga Samgraha).

As compared to other classics his work “Madhava nidana” otherwise called “Rukvinischayam” is something unique. His work mainly deals with the Nidanam(cause) for a disease. The Pathology, Signs & Symptoms,Prognosis, Complications etc. of a disease is also dealt very nicely in this text.

Kashyapa

Kashyapa is an early Medical Authority cited even by Charaka. His book named ‘Kashyapa Samhita’ is similar to ‘Charaka Samhita’ with a supplementary section giving detailed descriptions about Paediatrics including Rickets. This book is also known as ‘Vruddha Jivaka Tantram’. Many of the chapters of this book are not available.

Vridha Vagbhata

Vridha Vaghbhata, also named Ashtangasamgrahakaara after his famous compilation Ashtangasamgraha, compiled his text by refering the famous classics written by Charaka, Susrutha, Agnivesha, Bhela etc.. We can consider his period as about 6th or 7th Century AD, as the above Acharyas lived around 1-5thCentury AD.

Considering the importance and value, his compilation is considered as one among the Brihat-trayii along with Charaka Samhitha and Susrutha Samhitha.

Susruthacharya

In his text – Susrutha Samhitha – containing six sections and 186 chapters, Susrutha the foremost disciple of Dhanwanthary and father of Surgery – describes Eye diseases, Surgeries and Surgical instruments.

Charakacharya

Charakaacharya is the redactor of Agnivesha Tantra,(after that the Tantra is called Charaka Samhitha)written by Agnivesha, who is one of the disciple of Acharya Punarvasu Atreya(who is the propounder of the so called the famous Charaka Samhitha).

He is theprincipal exponent of Medical System called Kaya Chikitsa (Internal Medicine) is the Author of one of the most important Texts of Ayurveda namely Charaka Samhitha – containing eight sections and 120 chapters.
