ABHYANGAM:

In India, especially in Kerala, an average man does apply oil on his head and take bath, daily, before starting his daily routine. This is very effective for acquiring energy and vigour and also a refreshed feeling. It also helps to give a very sound sleep and improve the eye sight.

In Ayurveda, Abyangasnanam, the oil massage, does not mean mere application of oil over the body and head. Medicated oil that suits the individual and illness, is selected and scientifically massaged all over the body by specialized Therapists for the specified time prescribed from 40 minutes to one hour. Utmost care has to be taken to see that the massage is systematic and the pressure given by the two Therapists on both sides of the patint is equal. After the massage the patient is allowed to take rest for some time and allowed to take bath in medicated lukewarm water. Scientifically, the patient, after the oil massage should not be allowed to bathe in cold water. Seasame oil or coconut oil is used for head before starting the body massage. By this Therapy, the expected effect of the medicated oil is penetrated and spread throughout. Medicated powder and shampoo are used to wash off the oil from body and head after the treatment while taking bath. This therapy helps to prevent ailments due to Vatha Dosha, physically. Application of oil all over the body gives protection as well as resistance power against skin diseases. Besides good sleep and improved vision, it improves skin complexion too. This therapy is not recommended for those who suffer from vitiated Kapha Dosha.
