Tharpanam

Tharpanam is a special procedure for eye ailments like refractive errors, burning sensation of the eyes, retinopathies, fatigue, cataract, ptosis, Ocular muscle weakness etc. A paste of black-gram mixed with lukewarm water is formed in a recepticle around the orbit and a specially prepared medicate Oil with Brimhana Dravyas is poured over the eyes and the eyes are winked for a minimum time of approximately 35 minutes gradually increasing day by day for a maximum time 50 minutes and gradually decreasing vice-versa. This is often repeated for 7-21 days.
Thalam

THALAM:
Thalam is a procedure where a mixture of specially prepared powder mixed with medicated oil is applied on the vertex of the head for 20 to 30 minutes. This treatment is mainly helpful for curing Jathroordhwa Vikaras, ENT problems, migraine, psychiatry problems, Insomnia etc.
This treatment is also done for patients having Facial paralysis, Disease of eyes, chronic head ache and various Neurological deficits. After the Purification therapy, the hair of the patient is cut short, to the maximum possible (shaving of head would be better) and made to sit on a chair and the mixture is applied on the vertex and wiped off after 20 to 45 minutes and subsequently Rasnadi Choorna is applied over the area.

LEPANAM/UPANAHAM:
There are many diseases that require external application of medicines for their complete cure. Lepanam and Upanaham are such treatments where the medicines are applied in the affected part of the body.
In Lepanam a paste form of the medicine prepared from the appropriate drugs along with some suitable herbal liquids are used for the application. It is highily effective in Twak Rogas (skin diseases) like Eczema, Psoriasis etc.. and can also be applied as Mukha Lepa(applying on face) for Mukha Dooshika(Pimples), to increase the skin complexion etc.. Vilwadi Yoga, Dooshi Vishari Gutika,Rasnadi Choornam etc. are some examples of drugs that are used as Lepana Dravyas.
In Upanaham the paste form of medicine is applied and then covered with some leaves or cloth depending on the condition of the patient and the disease and retained for some specific time. Oedema due to arthritic complaints can be best cured by this application. Also Inflammations, Skin diseasesetc. can also be cured by Upanaham. Jatamayadi Choornam, Nagaradi Choornam etc. are used as Upanaha Dravyas.
This is useful for various types of inflammatory conditions, skin diseases, arthritis, gout, etc.

VASTHI:
Actually Vasthi means Bladder. In ancient days bladder of animals were used for performing this treatment and the name prevailed. Now sterilized equipments have replaced the use of bladder. The effect of Vasthi is directly felt in the colon, the prime abode of Vatha by this therapy. The morbid doshas and other toxins trapped in the tissues for long are eliminated and restore equilibrium. Vasthi is very effective for Kidney Stones, Spleen disorders, Colic calculus and other diseases due to Vatha disorders. Vasthi should not be performed on patients affected with Diabetis, Piles, Obesity and Injuries to the Anus. Vasthi is one of the “Panchakarma”. Vasthi that is being done with Herbal oil is called Anuvasana Vasthi and that with herbal decoction nirooha vasthi. Nirooha vasthi is divided in to two types according to the quantity of herbal decoction used for colonic introduction. During the treatment both the vasthies are administered alternatively for specific periods depending on the patient’s constitution and severity of the disease. As with all the other Panchakarma purification procedures, here also oil and sweat therapies are essential. After this, Luke warm water and freshly prepared vasthi liquid is injected into the colon via rectum. In Anusavana vasthi no harm will occur even if the fluid remain inside the colon for long but in nirooha the fluid should be discharged within 45 minutes to one hour. Nirooha stimulates the eliminatory process where as Anuvasana nourishes and strengthens the colon. In both cases the discharged fluid will contain amam and other toxins along with faucal matter.
SNEHA VASTHI:
This karma is indicated in the vitiation of vata. Oil processed with various medicines is administered through the anal route using a special instrument. This imparts oleation and nourishment apart from curing the disease. The procedure is to be done immediately after the noon/evening meals. Sneha vasti along with kashaya vasti is administered in numbers of 8, 15 or 30.
KASHAYA VASTHI:
It is beneficial as Rejuvenation therapy. It enhance Sport performance. And shows excellent results inArthritis, Paralysis, Rheumatism, Constipation, Strengthen the intestine & digestive system

NJAVARA KIZHI:
Njavara kizhi is a treatment procedure by using a special type of rice called Njavara. It can be done locally or on whole body. Njavara rice is boiled in bala kwatha,milk and also special medicines according to the disease is added.It is a type of Brimhana swedana which give nourishment to dathus. Like all other swedana procedures njavarakizhi is also done in seven postures.Njavara kizhi is specially indicated in pakshagata, mamsakshaya,limb weakness so in muscular dystrophy and in all dathukshayas. Special Njavara kizhi using special medicines and fleshes are very effective in pakshagata, muscle weakness and dathukshaya.
Urovasthi
UROVASTHI:
This is a procedure where medicated oil is made to retain by making a receptacle made of black-gram paste in the Uro pradesha(chest region) for a specific time,depending on the condition of the patient. The oil is selected according to the the patient’s health and severity of the disease. The oil is heated slightly before application.
Urovasthi is effective for Urosoola(chest pain), Hridroga(mild Angina & M I).
Avagaham
AVAGAHAM:
Avagaham is a special Swedana (Sudation) process where the patient is made to sit in squatting position in the Avagaham tub for a specific time. The tub is partially filled with medicated lukewarm water and the temperature of the liquid is maintained at a constant temperature. The time and the medicne may vary according to the condition of the patient and the disease.
Avagaham is highly effective for Vasthi rogas (Diseaes affecting the Bladder and the Urinary tract) – Moothra Sangam (Residual urine), Moothraghatam (Difficulty in micturation) , Moothrakrichrum (Painful micturation).Itis also effective in Guda rogas(Ano rectal diseases) – Arsas(Haemorrhoids),Bhagandaram(Fistula-in-ano), Vidradi(Anal abcess) etc..

VIRECHANAM:
This is for elimination of pitha related toxins from the body by cleansing of intestine and other pitha connected regions. It is the downward expulsion of doshas through anal route. 15 fays after undergoing emesis therapy, i.e. when the patient has come to normal diet, oil and sweat therapy have to be done, even if the patient had these, during emesis therapy. Purgatives are given usually by 6 a.m. avipathy choorna is used as a lexative. After around two hours, the process of purgation starts. Drinking hot water is good to stimulate the process. The toxic pitha and kapha are discharged. Virechana is good for treating Diabetis, Colitis, Jaundice, Spleen enlargement, Arthritis asthma, Dysuria and all types of Intestinal disorders. This treatment is not advisable for Infants, old and pregnant women.
Virechanam is the intake of oral medicines leading to the elimination of toxins through the anal route. It eliminates excess bile toxins from the mid zone of the body. Virechanam constitutes one of the treatments of Panchakarma. When the digestive tract is clean and toxic-free, it benefits the entire body system. As a result, the person’s appetite increases, body strength enhances and the person becomes active and buoyant. Thus virechanam also functions as an excellent rejuvenative procedure. Herbal powder, medicated castor oil, or herbal paste is commonly used as the purgative medicine. Avipathychoornam is the herbal powder generally used for the treatment. It is a mixture of herbs like turpith, embellia fruits, dry ginger,lotus,cardamom, long pepper,konch,sweet flag, cinnamon, etc. The treatment usually begins early in the morning. The person consumes the appropriate herbal medicine in empty stomach. The medicine does a good cleansing of the entire digestive system. And within 1 to 2 hours he empties his bowels, expelling along with it, all the accumulated toxins. The dose of medicines, diet patterns etc. are to be strictly followed as per the doctor’s recommendation. Virechanam, using strong medicines, is mostly done only once in a month under the supervision of doctors
Anjanam
ANJANAM:
A Special medicine is applied in the eyes for lacrimation of the eyes. It keeps the vision clear.
